Venice, the City of Canals

Located in Northeastern Italy, Venice spans across 118 islands that are connected by countless canals and hundreds of bridges. Venice is also known to be the first real international financial center trading with the Middle-East, which gave it access to the Silk Road and its vast foreign products. However, Venice was always a prize that was under bombardment by neighboring empirical ambitions, such as the Byzantines and Napoleon, for its strategic geographic location.

Venice is not a stranger to invaders. Even in times of peace, it has to deal with the floods coming in from the Adriatic between September and February. In the modern era, Venice was the center of arts, literature, and architecture. It is also important to note that most of Venice’s historical infrastructure was not damaged during the two World Wars, which allows us to see all of its glory today.

An astounding 60,000 tourists a day visit the city of Venice, which equates to around 25 million a year – a number that is controlled by limiting the number of cruise ships that are allowed to dock at its ports.

Not Just a Day Trip

Despite all the cruise ships bringing in millions of “one-day” tourists into the city, Venice is much more than that. The best way to visit Venice is to first land at the Marco Polo International Airport – which is named after the Venetian pioneer that went on a 24 year long and 15,000-mile journey to China to then return with countless treasures— then stay at one of the many hotels in the city.

St. Mark’s Basilica Church is by far Venice’s most popular tourist site. It is also one of the most beautiful churches ever constructed. It is unique because it is not very Gothic-looking, but it has been clearly influenced by the Byzantines. Other than the obvious exterior dome structures, the interior gold ceilings are painted with beautiful mosaics that depict a shared past so gorgeously displayed at the Museum of St. Mark’s. However, there are rules that you need to know before entering. For example, no shoulders or knees showing on men, women, and children. Also, large backpacks and purses are not allowed.

There's also the Doge’s Palace to see, which is right next to the Basilica. The former Venetian rulers used to live here, and the structure still commands power and respect because of its impressive architecture and design. As usual with most Venetian structures, the inside is even more impressive than the outside. Doge’s Palace houses one of the largest oil painting on earth, depicting Paradise according to the genius minds of the time.

Another must do is a visit to Murano, which is famous for glassmaking. The ancient art of blowing glass was perfected with the Roman Empire, and the inhabitants of Murano have continued this tradition until today, so it is definitely worth a visit. As a watch brand, we appreciate the skill, dedication, design, and craftsmanship that goes into making world-famous Murano glass.

If you find yourself in Europe, then a stop in Venice is well worth it!
